Judy’s Credentials

Relationship Influencers

I’m privileged to have trained under renown relationship experts. Drs. John and Julie Gottman  are known for their work on marital stability and divorce prediction along with their 40-year longitudinal studies. Dr. Sue Johnson is a leading innovator having developed Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples. Her influence has enhanced my work with couples. Dr. Dan Siegel, a pioneer in the field of Interpersonal Neurobiology, has taught me practical techniques to promote well-being in the clients I work with. I’ve met all of them when I attended conference summits Seattle.

Dr. Brene Brown, a famous social scientist and researcher whose books and teachings make me believe she’s a woman after my own heart.  I integrate the impact of all these mentors in my counseling practice as well as the writing of my memoir, Beyond Messy Marriages.

Spiritual Directors

Dr. David G. Benner has influenced me profoundly through individual and group retreats as my Spiritual Director. Also, while as a graduate student, he was my professor whose writings resonated deeply with my core message. Currently, I claim Fr. Richard Rohr as my spiritual director even though I’ve not met him personally, nor have I come from a Catholic faith background. But every paragraph of my latest reading, “Just This,” has been worth pondering with where I’m at in my spiritual journey.

Writing Mentors

It’s been extremely valuable to learn beyond the counseling profession and gain wisdom from non-therapists. My development as an author impacts therapy as I write Beyond Messy Marriages. Marion Roach Smith, my writing coach from New York, helps me tell a concise story to illustrate our authentic journey. Also, Jeff Goins continues to be instrumental in his teachings and connecting me with other writers.

Education

I wouldn’t normally choose so many initials by my name, but I did get a second master’s degree, M.S. (Master of Science) in Christian Psychological Studies from Richmont University, formerly Psychological Studies Institute. My first one is an M.A. (Master of Arts) degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University.

In my younger years I graduated from Bryan College with a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) in Christian Education.

If you’re interested, I graduated from Gull Lake High School in Richland, Michigan and didn’t have a clue about a vision for my life then. Check out my Face Insecurity article. Feel free to read more about me.
